First GA Policy Round of the Year
BIRMINGHAM, AL: The first debate has just ended between four Georgia debaters and we have the inside scoop. The debate occured at the Samford Debate Institute.
On the Affirmative were Kurtis Anderson (Warner Robins HS) & Robert Walker (Warner Robins HS). Debating on the Negative were Sonya Jooma (Fayette County HS) & Daniel Bagwell (Early County HS).
The affirmative called to boost funding to the G8. They accessed four different advantages: Soft Power, Terrorism, AIDS, and Global Warming. The internal links to these advantages mostly stemmed off of boosting G8 credibility.
The negative essentially had five arguments. They proposed a CP in which China would boost the funding towards the G8, rather than the US. Politics was the net benefit to the CP. They also ran the Pan Africa Disadvantage which argues that Africa is unifying now, which solves their domestic problems, and that Western aid undermines Africa’s cooperation that is key to solving their own domestic problems. The impact of the DA is genocide and nuclear war. The politics scenario in which Sonya and Dan were rolling with was Iraq Drawdown- which talks about drawing down forces in the War in Iraq.
The 2AC argued several arguments on the flows which included 3 permutations on the CP and solvency deficit arguments. An offensive argument on the Counterplan was that Chinese Aid is actually not accepted by Africans. The Politics flow featured your typical non uniques and turns. However, the affirmative made a mistake by making a Bush Unpopular argument- which fed the Neg’s uniqueness. The Pan Africa flow featured turns like AIDS is tearing the continent apart and many other defensive arguments.
The 2NC went for Politics and the counterplan [go figure, Dan would take that!] After the round, Daniel said, “Their non-unique boosted our uniqueness and they misinterpreted their own Withdrawal turn, since it will never happen and we claim to solve a bad withdrawal that turns their imperialism impacts as to why it’s good. China solves everything and the perms all link to the net benefits and lead to nuclear conflict.”
The 1AR also makes some argument selection mistakes and only extends the permutations on the Counterplan and a solvency deficit argument. The 2NR went for politics and Counterplan and finishes the debate with great impact analysis.
The negative was a clear victor in tonight’s debate but there is still plenty of season left! As for now, the debaters are currently working on rebuttal redos with Ryan Galloway, who Daniel Bagwell cites as a “God.”
Great job everyone and special thanks to Daniel Bagwell for the information!
