Congrats to Nichole Kayne, Northern Mountain District Student of the Year
We’d like to congratulate Lakeview Academy debater Nichole Kayne. She was selected to be the District Student of the Year. Not to mention, she was also named outstanding speaker in 2 out of 3 preliminary sessions at the NCFL National Championship tournament.
The National Forensic League’s motto is “training youth for leadership.” We always hope that we have achieved that goal with our students, but with Nichole Kayne that is certainly true. Nichole began her speech and debate career as a sophomore, but was almost overwhelmed by her first attempt at extemporaneous speaking. Her 12 points did not allow her to become an NFL member that year. However, she continued to participate in public speaking events at school and in the community, and by her senior year, she was determined to become more competitive. She began by signing up for the first tournament of the season and has progressed from entering a single event per tournament to triple entering each time it is permitted.
Nichole loves student congress, and in order to have more practice tournaments, she recruited her friends from other high schools into the activity. Her efforts have paid off, and two of our area high schools have reactivated NFL membership and their students participate regularly at our local monthly congresses. Two other local schools are also working on establishing programs as a result of her effort. (Last year, our location forced us to drive at least 50 miles for interscholastic practice. Now we only have to drive 6 miles at most. )
Nichole has mentored younger members of our school team and is always trying to convince students to join speech and debate. Debate and speech participation in Georgia has declined since 2001 and coaching a student as enthusiastic as Nichole makes my job easier. Her positive attitude has not only increased our student participation, it has increased participation at student congresses around the state. She has used her leadership skills to strengthen speech and debate throughout the Northern Georgia Mountain district.
