GFD Welcomes Maggie Berthiaume to Georgia Debate!
Georgia Forensics Daily is proud to start our new campaign to welcome incoming coaches for the 2008-2009 school year. Last I counted, I saw over ten job openings in the debate community. Only one to my knowledge has been filled. That position comes from Alpharetta, GA in Chattahoochee High School.
Maggie Berthiaume has been named the new Director of Debate at Chattahoochee High School. Maggie has a long list of credentials that follow her. She has be the Director of Policy Debate at the successful Lexington High School (MA) for the previous two seasons. While there, she coached teams to elimination rounds at every major tournament and has qualified several teams to the TOC, NFL Nats and CFL Nats. Maggie debated for The Blake School (MN) in High School. She qualified to the Tournament of Champions three times. She also was the 2001 recipient of the Julia Burke Award. In college, she debated for Dartmouth College where she reached the semifinals of CEDA Nationals. She also qualified for the NDT three times, reaching the elimination rounds in all three years.
Georgia Forensics Daily sat down with Maggie {electronically} and had the following interview! Enjoy!
JM: What got you interested in coaching debate?
MB: I started debating as a 9th grader at Blake in Minneapolis and debate was the single most influential activity of high school and college. After I was done debating, I knew I wanted to continue working with debaters. I had always wanted to be a teacher, and so the choice was ultimately pretty easy for me.
JM: What made you interested in this position?
MB: Chattahoochee is a great school with an outstanding program and I’m honored to be selected to coach there. I love the fun of coaching a big team – coming from Lexington I know the enjoyment and energy of having 100+ students on the team.
JM: What do you think your biggest challenges will be?
MB: Adjusting to the weather! I’ve always lived in cold places and there’s no weather I like better than snow. Everyone tells me Atlanta is a great place to live though, so it’s a problem I’m lucky to have.
JM: What are you most looking forward to?
MB: I’m most looking forward to getting settled at school and meeting the new students. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of the debaters, but not all of them, and it’s always fun to get to do that. After that, getting ready for the fall season!
JM: If you could be a bird, what bird would you be and why?
MB: A chickadee. They’re ridiculously cheerful winter birds that like to play in the snow.
